It
all began in 1990, when Beyonce' and LaTavia
Roberson met as members of a dancing and
rapping group in Houston, Texas, called
Girls Tyme. They were 8 years old.
In
1993, as a group of six, which also included
Kelly Rowland, Tamar Davis, and sisters
Nikki and Nina Taylor, Girls
Tyme appeared on "Star
Search." They came in second.
When
Beyonce's father signed on as the group's
manager, he made the decision to downsize
the group. Tamar Davis and the Taylor
sisters were let go and LeToya Luckett was
added.
In 1997, the four-some, now called Destiny's
Child, hit it big with a #1 hit:
In 2000, for a variety of reasons, LaTavia
and LeToya left the group. They were
replaced by Michelle Williams and, briefly,
Farrah Franklin.
The
trio of Beyonce', Kelly and Michelle is how
most people remember Destiny’s Child.
Musical historians describe the group as a
worthy successor to The Supremes and credit
them with inspiring a whole generation of
female R&B vocalists.
The
trio stayed together until 2006, at which
point Beyonce' went off into the
stratosphere with a solo career that just
gets bigger every year.
Here’s
a trio of later Destiny’s Child hit
singles:
