WHO WE ARE                 HOW TO ORDER

THE POINTER SISTERS
1980's

Ruth (1946 -      ), Anita (1948 -      )
Bonnie (1950 - 2020), June (1953 - 2006)

The Pointer Sisters (who REALLY were sisters) were the daughters of a preacher in Oakland, California.  They began singing in the 1960’s, but burst into national prominence in the early 70’s.

Their clothing was a throwback to the 40’s, and their musical style was as wide as their Cinemascope smiles.  They sang a little bit of everything:  r&b, pop, rock, country, blues, jazz.  And they sang them all with polish and panache.

More about the Pointer Sisters in a mo, but here are the website items we’re featuring today:

Actually, the Pointer Sisters could have been called The Revolving Doors.  Who actually was in the group changed repeatedly.  June and Bonnie came and went.  Sometimes there were four Pointer Sisters.  Sometimes only three.

Replacements included Ruth’s daughter, Issa, and her granddaughter, Sadako.

Their greatest success was in the 1970’s and 1980’s.  They won 3 Grammys during that period.  But "revolving" versions of The Pointer Sisters performed right up until the last decade.  They were always a very popular live act, although the touring was limited as they grew older.

June, who had chronic substance abuse problems, passed away at 52 in 2006 and Bonnie died at age 70 in 2020.
